Robert Bell Robert Bell serves as the Executive Director of both the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) and World Teleport Association (WTA), where he is responsible for the programs, finances and operations of the organizations. Mr. Bell has led business development missions to cities in Asia and the US; authored articles in Asia-Pacific Satellite, The Municipal Journal of Telecommunications Policy, Telecommunications and Asian Communications; and appeared in segments of ABC World News and The Discovery Channel. He is a frequent speaker and moderator at industry conferences including Satellite, NAB, SATCON and Sportel.
Mike Cook Mike Cook is Senior Vice President of the North America Division at Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES). Mr. Cook was responsible for the development and launch of the Hughes SPACEWAYTM 3 broadband satellite system, and is part of the executive team running the North America business with specific responsibility for sales and marketing across the enterprise, government, SME, and consumer markets. Prior to moving to the United States, Mr. Cook was the leading member of the team that founded HOT Telecommunications Group-Europe's leading VSAT service provider and served as its Managing Director. Initially a joint venture with Olivetti Telecommunications, HOT became a wholly owned subsidiary of Hughes in September 1998. Mr. Cook was named Vice President of HNS Europe in April 1999. Mr. Cook has more than 30 years' experience in telecommunications, having worked previously for Cable & Wireless and Alcatel Business Systems. At Alcatel, he held a variety of roles including Director of Business Development, in which he was responsible for the initial introduction of Alcatel telecommunication products into the UK. During his last two years with Alcatel, Mr. Cook was Director of the Data Systems Division. Mr. Cook has taken an active role in the development of the VSAT industry. He represented Hughes Network Systems as a founding member of the Global VSAT Forum and served as a Director of the Forum. He has long been a leading advocate for the development and deployment of broadband satellite systems and has contributed as an industry representative in proceedings, both in the UK House of Commons and in the US Congress. Mr. Cook holds a first-class B.S. (Honors) degree in mathematics from Exeter University.
Harry Jessell Prior to launching TVNEWSDAY.com in January 2006, Harry worked for more than 25 years as a reporter and editor for Broadcasting & Cable (formerly Broadcasting), the leading business magazine for the TV and radio industries. As the magazine's top editor from 1997 to 2004, Harry moved the magazine from Washington, D.C., to New York City and shifted its focus from law and regulation to programming and advertising. On the magazine's editorial page and in his bi-weekly column, he advocated full First Amendment protections for and minimal government regulation of broadcasting and other electronic media. As a reporter in the 1980s and early 1990s, Harry covered broadcast technology, cable TV, the Federal Communications Commission, Congress and the federal courts. He was named executive editor in 1993 and editor in 1997. He has appeared regularly on TV and radio, lectured at universities and moderated numerous panels at industry conferences. In 1999, he was profiled in MIN Magazine as editor of one of "The Year's Top 12 Magazines." Harry graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1976, with a BA in journalism. He lives with his wife, Rosemary, and their two children, Lauren and Mary, in Chatham, N.J., a suburb of New York City. John Mattingly John Mattingly has served as Senior Vice President for MSV since July 2008 where he is responsible for strategic initiatives related to MSV's next generation network including international spectrum negotiations. He is also supporting MSV objectives within the financial community. He joined MSV in March 2007 and previously headed the company's satellite services business. From 2002 to 2007 Mr. Mattingly participated in the satellite and telecommunications industries as a private investor and consultant. Previously, Mr. Mattingly served as President, Satellite Services, for COMSAT Corp and Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications from 1997 to 2001 and President of COMSAT International from 2001 to 2002. He joined COMSAT in 1994. Earlier in his career Mr. Mattingly was Senior Vice President and General Manager, OrionNet, Inc., a subsidiary of Orion Network Systems from 1993 to 1994. From 1982 to 1993 Mr. Mattingly worked for American Satellite Company, which subsequently became CONTEL ASC, and then merged with GTE Spacenet in 1991. Mr. Mattingly holds a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from George Washington University. MSV is redefining wireless communications through its development of a hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications network, based on MSV's patented ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) technology. Craig Moffett Craig Moffett joined Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. as the Senior Analyst for U.S. Cable and Satellite Broadcasting in 2002. Mr. Moffett was voted the #1 analyst in the sector in the 2006 Institutional Investors' All-American-Research poll, in only his third year as an analyst. Mr. Moffett spent eleven years at The Boston Consulting Group, where as a Partner and Vice President he led the firm's global practice in telecommunications. At BCG, he led client relationships spanning the local exchange, wireless, long distance, and equipment sectors in the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. His consulting relationship with RBOC Bell Atlantic (and pre-cursor Nynex) spanned more than a decade. He was the author of more than twenty articles in telecommunications journals, and published forecasts of the over-capacity and subsequent price collapse of the U.S. inter-exchange, CLEC and equipment markets in early 1999. Most recently, Mr. Moffett was the President of SOTHEBYS.COM, the e-commerce venture of the venerable auction house, where he led a team of 300 people through the company's technology development phase and launch in early 2000, and he subsequently led SOTHEBYS.COM to the highest first-year sales of any consumer website ever launched. As a member of the Executive Committee of Sotheby's Holdings, Mr. Moffett was an instrumental member of the crisis-response team that steered the company through the challenges arising from anti-trust proceedings related to its pricing activity during the mid-1990s. Mr. Moffett earned a BA from Brown University in 1984, where he graduated phi beta kappa and Magna cum laude. He earned an MBA with Honors from the Harvard Business School in 1989.
Chris Quilty Chris Quilty has covered technology and specialty manufacturing companies since joining Raymond James in 1996. His research efforts currently focus on companies in the bar code industry and enterprise mobility solutions. In addition, Mr. Quilty also covers the defense electronics sector, where he has twice been recognized by The Wall Street Journal as a Best on the Street analyst, including a first place finish for 2004. Mr. Quilty holds a bachelor of science degree in systems engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining Raymond James, Mr. Quilty served five years as a deep-sea diving officer in the Navy special operations community.
Jimmy Schaeffler Jimmy Schaeffler, Chairman and Chief Service Officer for The Carmel Group (www.carmelgroup.com), is a three and a half decade-long telecommunications (and now computer and media) industry veteran. Mr. Schaeffler began his professional career with ABC Sports during the 1972 Munich Olympics, working along side Roone Arledge, Peter Jennings and Jim McKay. He was an executive and attorney with ABC Sports through the 1984 Games in Sarajevo. During 1986–90, Mr. Schaeffler was the Assistant General Counsel for the U.S. Olympic Committee, and afterwards the vice president and general counsel of the Aspen, CO-based Adventure World Productions and Ashcroft Ski Touring. Most recently, Mr. Schaeffler was the DBS analyst for Paul Kagan Associates. As the company's DBS expert during 1992–1995, Mr. Schaeffler was the principal author, researcher and analyst for the monthly DBS newsletter and for the inaugural edition of what was then the industry's premier databook, The State of DBS. Subsequent writings include The Carmel Group's DBS Databook 2003: North America and in 2006, DVRs: Time In A Magical Box, as well as Telecom Cap Ex – Western Europe. His expert services, including consulting and significant litigation support, have been engaged by scores of the world's largest telecommunications, law firms and computer and media-based companies. Mr. Schaeffler is regularly consulted and his positions quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Time, Newsweek, Business Week, The New York Times, USA Today, Investor's Business Daily, and The Los Angeles Times. He regularly contributes articles to key trade journals such as Multichannel News, TWICE and Broadband Properties magazines. He is also on the editorial board of Broadband Properties , and is on the advisory board for Near Earth LLC, a greatly respected Wall Street firm that focuses on financing in the satellite sector. Mr. Schaeffler holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (with high honors) from the University of California, Berkeley. He also speaks fluent German (having studied several terms at the Goethe Institute) and he holds a law degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where he served as a staff member of and writer for the Pacific Law Journal. He is licensed to practice law in CA, MN, CO and Washington, DC, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Thomas W. Watts Tom Watts is a Managing Director and Senior Research Analyst at Cowen and Company. He leads the telecom equity research team covering telecom services, data and Internet services, and satellite services. Prior to joining Cowen, Mr. Watts served as a Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, where he received top rankings for coverage of the satellite communications sector by both Institutional Investor magazine and the Wall Street Journal. He also received broader recognition by the Wall Street Journal as one of the seven best stock pickers across all industry segments. Previously Mr. Watts held senior positions at Bear Stearns, Ascent Communications Advisors, and Booz Allen & Hamilton.
